Lenny Kravitz Denies The Aerosmith Rumors

Lenny Kravitz has shot down reports he is set to take over from Steven Tyler as Aerosmith frontman, insisting the singer is irreplaceable.

Tyler left the group earlier this year, announcing plans for a two-year hiatus, but his band mates are determined to continue without him and are currently considering replacement singers for a 2010 album and tour.

Former Geffen Records executive John Kalodner, the man behind the legendary group’s 1980s comeback, recently urged the crestfallen Aerosmith band mates to sign Kravitz to take over from Tyler.

However, although the rocker is “flattered” by Kalodner’s comments, he’s adamant he would never consider stepping into Tyler’s role.

On his Twitter.com page, Kravitz writes, “As much as I am flattered that Aerosmith’s camp would consider me to front the band, Steven Tyler is a family friend, and no voice could ever take the place of his. I hope the band stays together. They are classic.”

While the rest of the band thinks Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler is back to using drugs again, a spokesman for Tyler is claiming otherwise.

Tyler’s spokesman has said he’s just taking a quick break to nurse a shoulder injury and he’s working on his autobiography at the same time.

Whatever the truth may be, these guys just need to talk it out with each other instead of through other people.

Aerosmith Bandmates Say Steven Tyler is Struggling

Steven Tyler’s Aerosmith bandmates say they’re worried about their frontman’s health and well being.

“Steven, he isolates more and more all the time — that’s what gives it away to me that there’s something going on,” drummer Joey Kramer tells Billboard.com. “I don’t know what that is. I know he’s made some not so great choices and he’s got some negative influences around him now. I love the guy. I just want to see him get some help.”

Guitarist Brad Whitford acknowledges that “this guy[Steven Tyler] has a tremendous history of drug abuse, and you have to be suspicious that this is something that’s probably going on with him. I have a feeling we might be looking at someone who’s just really struggling very badly.” Whitford adds that Tyler’s behavior in recent years “was becoming more erratic and unreasonable” leading to the singer’s recent decision to take two years away from Aerosmith to focus on what he refers to as “brand Tyler.”

Kramer says he’s left several voice messages for Tyler, but none have been returned.

Whatever is going on, we wish them all the best.

Steven Tyler Quitting Aerosmith? He says “It Just Ain’t True”

Steven Tyler has blasted rumors he has quit Aerosmith – insisting he will continue to sing with the legendary band.

Guitarist Joe Perry announced the shocking news over the weekend, revealing he had read online that the singer had “quit” – and assumed the story was true because Tyler had been distancing himself from his band mates over the previous few months.

Perry even went on to talk about replacing their iconic frontman, but Tyler has now spoken out about the rumors – and baffled his band mates by insisting he has no plans to leave the group.

The singer teamed up with Perry on stage in New York on Tuesday night for the guitarist’s gig, to belt out their Aerosmith hit Walk This Way. And during the encore Tyler took the opportunity to reassure fans the reports of his departure are not true.

He told the crowd, “I just want New York to know that I’m not leaving Aerosmith. The break-up – it just ain’t true.”

Steven Tyler Leaving Aerosmith

After 40 years, Steven Tyler has quit Aerosmith by walking out on the “Crazy” rockers following a performance in Abu Dhabi last month, if band guitarist Joe Perry is to be believed.

The report comes just months after the singer spoke out publicly to dismiss reports the band was on the verge of splitting. In August, Tyler broke his shoulder after falling off stage while performing in South Dakota, and the group was forced to scrap the remainder of its summer tour.

Perry admits that following the accident he and Tyler didn’t speak for more than a month and Perry fears his pal has left the rock group after its performance as part of the Formula One racing season’s final weekend in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 30.

“Steven quit as far as I can tell. I don’t know any more than you do about it. I got off the plane two nights ago. I saw online that Steven said that he was going to leave the band. I don’t know for how long, indefinitely or whatever. Other than that, I don’t know,” he tells The Las Vegas Sun.

Perry claims the discord in the band can be attributed to Tyler’s failure to return phone calls: “Frankly, the last few months I’ve been wanting not to rock the boat. I don’t want him cancelling any more gigs. We really wanted to do these last four. We just kind of didn’t want to call him out or anything and get him anymore pissed off, for whatever reason. So we just let things lie. So we did the gigs and, like I said, I got off the plane and saw this online. That’s how I know about it… He has had no contact with me or the other band members.”

Joe Perry says he’s determined to continue Aerosmith, even if its famous frontman refuses to return.

“Right now I’m adjusting to how we’re going to go on…We’re just trying to – at least I am – trying to figure out what direction the band should take….”

Aerosmith Guitarist Goes Solo

Aerosmith has survived drugs, departures, divorces and discord since the rock ‘n’ roll bad boys formed 40 years ago.

But guitarist Joe Perry does not know if the band will overcome its latest troubles, and is forging ahead with his own ambitious touring and recording plans.

Aerosmith has been on a wobbly footing for the past few years, beset by various medical ailments that have prevented it from recording its first album of new material since 2001.

Things came to a head two months ago when the band canceled a stop-start U.S. tour after singer Steven Tyler fell off the stage and broke his shoulder.

Tyler, who spent time in rehab last year, has not spoken to his bandmates since that night, instead entrusting his newly-hired managers to send out occasional emails, Perry told Reuters in a recent interview.

“I’m an eternal optimist,” he said. “We’ve been though some pretty thin times and some pretty thick times, and there have been periods when Steven and I — for no reason other than just to get some space — have not talked to each other for months. Then we get back together and things mesh.”

Presumably some words will be exchanged later this month when Aerosmith regroups for two shows in Hawaii, the result of a lawsuit filed by fans upset when the band scrapped a planned appearance there two years ago.

SONGWRITING PARTNERSHIP ON ROCKS

But perhaps more worryingly, Tyler and Perry — the primary songwriters in Aerosmith — have not composed a song together in 10 years, Perry said.

“I’m down in my studio every day, writing, and for some reason he wants to write with people like (outside songwriter) Mark Hudson and whatever,” he said. “I can’t explain it.” (Neither Hudson nor Tyler’s representatives responded to emails seeking comment.)

Instead, songs that Perry had hoped would end up on the next Aerosmith album — if only Tyler had added vocals — can now be found on Perry’s fifth solo album “Have Guitar Will Travel,” which was released on Tuesday.

Perry sings on most of the tracks, while an unknown German singer named Hagen Grohe sings on four. Perry’s wife, Billie, discovered Grohe on YouTube and they brought him over to the United States. (Beat that, “American Idol” judges!)

Billie Perry actually wrote the lyrics for one of the tracks, the ballad “Do You Wonder,” which sounds as if it could have been a massive Aerosmith hit.

“Yeah, it could have been — if there was an Aerosmith to record it, if it ever had people that actually believed in it,” Joe Perry said.

He says he has received positive feedback from the band’s other members, guitarist Brad Whitford, bass player Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer.

“I don’t know if Steven’s heard the record,” Perry added. “I don’t even know if he even listened to the last one (2005′s “Joe Perry”) all the way through.”

At any rate, Perry is pressing ahead with promotion for “Have Guitar Will Travel,” an independent release whose title is the result of a competition Perry conducted on Twitter. He plans to tour through November and then launch a three-month world trek at the beginning of 2010.

He also wants to record a new solo album, since the songs for the current one were written the arrival of Grohe.

“Now that I know what Hagen’s capable of, after working with him on this, I’ll be kinda tuning in sonically to what he can do. The next one will be another jump ahead, and that’s gonna happen sooner than later,” he said.

A recent Las Vegas gig with another guitarist estranged from his singer, former Guns N’ Roses member Slash, could also yield various possibilities. Slash was present at Perry’s club show in Los Angeles on Tuesday, when the set list included a reggae version of Aerosmith’s “Dream On.”

“I’m wide open,” Perry said. “I’m out there and playing better than I’ve played in a long time. I’m inspired. I’m doing some of these other side projects, and I’m looking forward to doing more.”

As for his day job, “I can definitely say that I’m not saying ‘No’ to an Aerosmith record or something, or tour or whatever … I think we need more time to get everybody healthy and the whole thing, and see if Steven wants to be part of the band again.”

Aerosmith is “Taking a Breather”

Joe Perry gave Aerosmith fans a scare last week when he revealed that he and Steven Tyler haven’t spoken since the singer’s stage fall in South Dakota put the brakes on the band’s summer tour. Rumors of an inevitable breakup for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame group quickly began circulating, but Perry calmed fans’ fears by telling the Boston Herald that he was disappointed by the tour’s sudden end, but doesn’t think this is the end of Aerosmith.

“Maybe we have three more records in us. Maybe we have five [and] seven years of touring,” Perry told the Herald. Perry added “Aerosmith is taking a breather” and that he hopes the band will reconvene in late spring to begin recording their next album and plot out a tour for next fall. Even though Perry and Tyler haven’t spoken in the last month and a half, Perry doesn’t see the radio silence lasting that much longer. “That day will come. Whether it’s him calling me or me calling him, it will happen,” Perry said.

Aerosmith might be “taking a breather,” but it’s only a short breath: Honolulu’s Star Bulletin reported yesterday that Aerosmith will perform a pair of concerts on October 18th and 20th in Maui as the result of a class action lawsuit decision from a Hawaii concert the band canceled two years ago. Plus, Aerosmith will head to the Middle East for a November 1st show at a Formula One race in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E. “We’re getting our visas together and the papers drawn up and everything,” Perry said. “So as far as I’m concerned we’re doing these dates.”
