Kings of Leon won Woodie of the Year and Green Day took home the Best Performing Woodie at the 2009 MTVu Woodie Awards, which brought together a cross-section of established and breaking artists Wednesday night (Nov. 19) at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
Although neither band was in attendance, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool accepted their award by video.
Indie darlings Matt & Kim kicked off the show — which celebrates the year’s best music as determined by MTVu’s college-centric audience — with an energetic performance of their breakout single “Lessons Learned.” Later, the duo returned to accept their Best Video Woodie award.
“We’ve had one heck of a year,” said Matt Johnson, before counterpart Kim Schifino leapt into the crowd.
Additional performers included veteran alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie, who rocked the audience with its “New Moon” soundtrack single “Meet Me on the Equinox,” as well as Passion Pit, the Dead Weather and Clipse, who were joined onstage by fellow rappers Cam’ron and Rick Ross.
Presenter highlights came from Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz and pop prankserts 3OH!3. Wentz rolled onto the stage holding a red Solo cup, while 3OH!3 gave a nod to Lady Gaga by dressing in her various VMA outfits. Asher Roth, will.i.am, and surprise guest Cyndi Lauper also presented awards.
While Kings of Leon and Green Day won the top prizes, smaller acts took home statues as well. Never Shout Never’s Christofer Drew Ingle and Missouri rapper Tech N9ne earned the Breaking Woodie and the Left Field Woodie, respectively.
The Woodie Awards air Dec. 4 on MTV Networks.

Michael Bublé remains in the top spot this week on the Billboard 200 chart for the second week in a row. Bublé’s album Crazy sold 203,000 copies this week, its first full week in stores, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
This marks Bublé’s second-best sales week ever. His best week came when “Call Me Irresponsible” started with 213,000 in 2007.
The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack comes in at No. 2 with 115,000 copies. The soundtrack’s release date was moved up in order to combat leaks. It may rise to the No.1 spot next week if it can stay ahead of Tim McGraw’s new album Southern Voice.

The “Twilight: New Moon” soundtrack’s release date was just moved up to Oct. 16 and we’ve got one of the tracks for you to check out.
Swedish alt-pop singer/songwriter Lykke Li’s contribution to “New Moon” is “Possbility,” a haunting piece of chamber pop that finds her humming over a hymnal drone and stark, metronomic piano line. “There’s a possibility all that I had was all I gon’ get,” Li sings through thick echoes. “So tell me when you hear my heart stop/You’re the only one that knows/Tell me when you hear my silence/There’s a possibility/ I wouldn’t know.”
Li, who recently ended a world tour in support of her debut album, “Youth Novels,” recently blogged about her contribution to the “New Moon” soundtrack. “I got to see ['New Moon'] when I was in LA for a show and an idea immediately rose to my mind,” said the singer. “It would take a few weeks before I even had a chance to sit down by a piano but then suddenly I wrote it while having a few days off in Sweden just coming out of a fever…I’m really proud of it and hope you will love it and need it.”
The “Twilight: New Moon” soundtrack also features indie darlings Bon Iver and St. Vincent in a duet entitled “Roslyn,” as well as songs by Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, Brooklyn band Grizzly Bear, U.K. outfit Muse and rockers Death Cab for Cutie, who claimed the lead single with “Meet Me on the Equinox.”

Country sweetheart Taylor Swift leads the pack with the most nominations for the upcoming 37th annual American Music Awards.
Swift has been nominated for 6 awards including Artist Of The Year. Her album Fearless was one of the biggest selling albums of the year, so it’s no surprise that she’s on top with the most nominations.
Swift has some stiff competition for Artist Of The Year as the late Michael Jackson is also nominated in the same category.
Jackson is right behind Swift with 5 nominations, followed by Eminem with 4. Beyoncé, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Kings Of Leon, and T.I. each have 3 nominations.
The nominees are determined by radio airplay and retail sales, while members of the public determine the winners through online voting.
The awards ceremony will take place at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on November 22 and will be broadcast on ABC.
The first batch of confirmed performers includes Alicia Keys, the Black Eyed Peas, Jennifer Lopez and “American Idol” runner-up Adam Lambert.

Death Cab For Cutie has just landed their single ‘Meet Me On The Equinox’ on the highly anticipated New Moon soundtrack.
The band released the following statement –
“We are very excited to be a part of this amazing series of novels set in our own backyard. It just seemed a perfect synergy that a band from the Northwest would create a song for a series of novels set in the Northwest.”
They went on to say, “We wrote ‘Meet Me On the Equinox’ to reflect the celestial themes and motifs that run throughout the Twilight series and we wanted to capture that desperate feeling of endings and beginnings that so strongly affect the main characters. This song marks the first attempt that Death Cab for Cutie has ever made at contributing new, unreleased material for a film and we are proud to be a part of the Twilight legacy.”
Fans will get a first listen of ‘Meet Me On The Equinox’ during the MTV Video Music Awards on September 13th.
