Katy Perry’s “Firework” Rules The Singles Chart

Katy Perry claimed her fourth No. 1 song on Billboard’s Hot 100 singles chart Wednesday, as “Firework” rose one place to the top spot.

The tune marks the third chart-topper from the pop singer’s new album “Teenage Dream,” which paradoxically has been a relatively slow seller. Its first single, “California Gurls,” led the field for six weeks in June, while the title track enjoyed a two-week stay in September. The album is currently at No. 19 on the Billboard 200 with sales of 725,000 units after 15 weeks.

Perry also led the Hot 100 for seven weeks in the summer of 2008 with “I Kissed a Girl,” her first chart entry.

“Firework’s” ascension to No. 1 means that six different songs in the past six weeks have claimed the top Hot 100 ranking, extending a turnover ratio not seen in more than 20 years.

Last week’s No. 1, Pink’s “Raise Your Glass,” slipped to No. 2, while Rihanna’s former chart-topper “What’s My Name?” rose two to No. 3. The Black Eyed Peas jumped five to No. 4 with “The Time (Dirty Bit).” Their new album “The Beginning” started poorly at No. 6 on the Billboard 200 Wednesday, with first-week sales of just 119,000 units.

Bruno Mars’ “Grenade” jumped five to No. 5, but he also dropped three to No. 7 with “Just the Way You Are.” In between Mars’s two tracks, Rihanna’s “Only Girl (In the World)” fell three to No. 6.

Ke$ha fell two to No. 8 with “We R Who We R,” Nelly slipped one to No. 9 with “Just a Dream,” and Trey Songz rebounded one to No. 10 with “Bottoms Up.”
