Lil Wayne Is First Artist Ever To have a #1 Album Behind Bars

November 1, 2010 by iMusicDaily

Lil Wayne had the top-selling album in the country earlier this month. He’s on the president’s iPod. He’s on the charts with two singles and a collaboration on a third. He’s on Facebook with updates for the more than 14 million people following them. He is, in every respect, on.

Don’t forget, Lil Wayne’s in jail. But his public persona is anything but locked away.

The rapper, who’s on track to be released Thursday after serving eight months in a gun case, is the first artist in 15 years to release a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart while serving a sentence. His “I Am Not a Human Being” spent a week in the top slot and has sold more than 323,000 copies since its Sept. 27 release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

It’s hardly a coveted distinction. But it is both a reflection of Lil Wayne’s popularity — he went to jail a multiplatinum-selling Grammy Award winner — and a result of astute maneuvering in the multimedia landscape that now envelops pop stardom. Staying relevant? Try omnipresent.

“The challenge was to make sure you feel like he never left,” says Bryan “Birdman” Williams, the Cash Money Records co-founder who has fostered Lil Wayne’s career since the rapper’s teens. “We came with a good strategy, and it worked.”

Lil’ Wayne doesn’t want fans to forget about him while he’s serving time behind bars, so his team has launched the site WeezyThanxYou.com.

The first message posted on Wayne’s site says, “During my prison stint, I want my fans to know I love you. I want all of you to know that I appreciate all the mail I get, and this is my way of saying thank you.”

Karen Civil, an online marketer at Wayne’s label says, “Wayne writes hand written letters giving updates on his time, and also answering questions from fans. The letter is rewritten to his blog.”

Billboard has released it’s Top 40 Money Makers list and we’ve got the top 10 here for you. How does Billboard calculate these top earners? Their top-secret Money Makers formula is comprised of, among other variables, monies earned from CD and digital sales, publishing royalties and all forms of streaming. But the largest component of their formula is, without a doubt, touring, as seen by this years top money maker.

Here are the Top 10 Money Makers:

1. U2 $108,601,283
2. Bruce Springsteen $57,619,037
3. Madonna $47,237,774
4. AC/DC $43,650,466
5. Britney Spears $38,885,267
6. Pink $36,347,658
7. Jonas Brothers $33,596,576
8. Coldplay $27,326,562
9. Kenny Chesney $26,581,141
10. Metallica $25,564,234

Other notable artists worth mentioning include:

13. Beyoncé $23,658,131
15. Miley Cyrus $21,285,996
21. Taylor Swift $17,204,646
25. Kings Of Leon $14,421,763
30. Lil Wayne $12,866,174
31. Paul McCartney $12,203,170

With touring being a large component to Billboard’s formula, after selling more than 10 million albums and extending practically every leg of her tour, Lady Gaga will certainly make next year’s list.

Lil Wayne Shoots 9 Videos In One Week

As we mentioned the other day, Lil Wayne will undoubtedly be an even bigger star when he gets out of jail. Wayne and his team have devised a business plan that will keep the rapper in the limelight while he’s behind bars, so fans won’t have to feel the lose while he’s put away.

According to Digital Spy, Lil Wayne shot nine music videos this past week with director David Rousseau!

“We shot some s**t from the We Are Young Money compilation album, we shot something from [Wayne's forthcoming] Tha Carter IV and some stuff from [Wayne's new album] Rebirth,” Rousseau told MTV News.

“Everybody is on board because everybody knows what’s at stake. Unlike T.I. and some of these other guys that’ve disappeared while they were in, the point is to keep Wayne [visible] on TV and everything for whatever time he’s in. He’s at the height of his career, you can’t let that momentum slip.”

I’ve got to give it to him, he’s not as dumb as he looks…

Lil Wayne Not Going To Jail Today! Sentencing Postponed.

Lil Wayne arrived in a Manhattan courtroom today where his lawyer, Stacey Richman, informed Judge Charles H. Solomon that the rapper is suffering from a cracked tooth and needs to postpone his sentence. The judge agreed and ruled to reschedule for March 2. Lucky bastard.

I have a feeling this all part of Lil Wayne’s plan. He’s got more business to take care of before he ends up behind bars for a year.

Wayne already has an entire new album worth of material ready to release and it happens to be a rock album, which will officially make the rapper a crossover artist. According to Donnell Alexander of NPR Music, “They [Wayne's Record Label] are moving from their headquarters in New Orleans to New York, to be close to him while he’s at Rikers Island.” It will be business as usual for Wayne’s label while he’s behind bars. He may come out even bigger than he was before he went to jail.
