There will be no spinoff of the hit show “Glee” for Lea Michele, Fox revealed yesterday. Rumors had been stirring that a spinoff was in the works, as Michele’s character is set to graduate from high school next season.
“There will not be a Glee spinoff, but those characters will graduate and it’s led to a really interesting idea that I think is going to give us something really cool to dig into next season,” Fox president of entertainment Kevin Reilly said at the Television Critics Association panel in Los Angeles.

The Impact Of Glee In The Music Industry

To measure the impact of “Glee” on pop music in 2010, just remember this: The misfits of McKinley High now have a place in the history books above the Fab Four.
In October, recordings by the show’s cast overtook the Beatles in terms of the number of songs placed on the Billboard Hot 100. As of December, “Glee” now has 102 songs on the chart — and with at least a season-and-a-half to go that has already been guaranteed by Fox, it’s a safe bet that the cast recordings will give Elvis Presley a run for the top spot in the record books with 108 singles. The show has become a single-selling machine the likes of which Ed Sullivan could only dream about.
And much like “The Ed Sullivan Show,” “Glee” has become the go-to platform for contemporary superstar acts with new songs to hawk. This wasn’t necessarily the case when the show debuted in May 2009. The best-selling digital single for the program’s first season was a version of Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’” that tallied 1 million total sales, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Now, halfway through year two, the season’s top seller is a rendition of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream,” with 286,000 copies sold to date — and it bested “Believin’” in first-week sales by 214,000 to 177,000.
The contrast in styles between the two songs — one a decades-old standard with recurring pop culture resonance, the other a track that hit No. 1 on the Hot 100 in August — exemplifies the show’s push toward offering more current pop hits faster to its track-happy core 18-49 viewing demographic.
“In many ways, ‘Glee’ was built on classic hits,” the show’s music supervisor PJ Bloom says. “We needed cultural staples to grab a broad audience — and it worked.”
The trend toward top 40 fare certainly helps the show in terms of relevance — tween viewers who are baffled by a reference to “A Chorus Line” feel like one of the cool kids when they can sing along to Bruno Mars’ “Just the Way You Are.” According to Fox, “Glee” is the No. 1 show in the 18-49 demographic among women, and the show’s push toward pop is a targeted move to keep these viewers happy.
“Now that ‘Glee’ is ‘Glee,’” Bloom says, “we have the latitude to explore newer songs on their way to becoming hits and the ability to add to the hitmaking machinery.”

Gorillaz Won’t let ‘Glee’ cover Their Songs

The virtual band Gorillaz isn’t exactly going bananas over the television musical series “Glee.”
Lead singer Damon Albarn says he’s not interested in letting the hit show perform covers of his band’s songs.
“We wouldn’t let that happen,” Albarn said in an interview with The Associated Press last week.
“And not that they’ve asked us because they haven’t, and now they definitely won’t,” he continued with a laugh.
Gorillaz is best known for their Grammy-winning jam “Feel Good Inc.,” which features De La Soul. The group released two platinum-selling albums, and their latest, “Plastic Beach,” came out in March.
“Glee,” the Fox television musical series about a high school glee club, recently premiered its second season. The show features cover songs from a slew of top artists, including episodes based on performers like Madonna and Britney Spears.
The series counts Beatles legend Paul McCartney among its fans. He asked “Glee” co-creator Ryan Murphy to consider using some of his tunes on the show.
But Albarn says shows like “Glee” showcase “a very poor substitute for the real thing.”
The “Glee” cast recently surpassed the Beatles for the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by a non-solo act, but Albarn says people shouldn’t take the feat seriously.
“Those songs won’t last like the Beatles by any stretch of their imagination,” he says. “They’ll be forgotten in a few years’ time.”
Gorillaz kicked off the North American leg of their “Escape to Plastic Beach World Tour” earlier this month. It wraps up in Vancouver on Nov. 3.
Bruno Mars Performs On Saturday Night Live

We’ll put aside what we really think of Bruno Mars because he killed it on Saturday Night Live this past weekend, which was hosted by Glee’s Jane Lynch. But what is up with his hair?! Newsflash…it’s 2010.

The “Glee” cast has surpassed the Beatles for the most appearances on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by a non-solo act.
The cast of the Fox television musical series about a high school glee club has six debuts on the chart this week. That gives it a total of 75 songs on the chart to the Beatles’ 71.
The show’s soundtrack got a boost after this week’s episode featuring the music of Britney Spears.
Elvis Presley still leads overall with 108 songs to chart on the Hot 100. He’s followed by James Brown with 91, then “Glee.”
The Beatles are sixth, behind Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin. Lil Wayne, Stevie Wonder and Jay-Z round out the Top 10.
Nielsen SoundScan says the “Glee” cast has sold 2.8 million albums and 11.5 million downloads.
