Etta James’ Album Sales Rise 378% Following Death

Etta James 02282011

On the Billboard 200 chart this past week, Etta James snagged her highest-charting album ever as “The Best of Etta James – 20th Century Masters: The Millennium Collection” rises from No. 162 to No. 46 with 8,000 sold (up 149% over the previous week) according to Nielsen SoundScan in a tracking week that reflected only two days of sales after her passing. Until this week, the R&B/blues legend had never gone higher than No. 68, when “At Last!” rose to that position in 1961.

For the week ending Sunday, Jan. 22, James’ overall catalog of albums sold 30,000 copies. That marks a 378% increase over the previous week, when her collected albums moved just over 6,000 units.

James also debuts on the Billboard 200 at No. 59 with the 1997 hits collection “Her Best” (7,000; up 4,226%) and re-enters at No. 96 with the aforementioned “At Last!” (5,000; up 907%).

Her famed single “At Last” was her best-selling song of the week as well. It shifted 63,000 downloads, enabling its re-entry at No. 29 on the Digital Songs chart, with a weekly gain of 1,361%. “At Last” is one of James’ 26 charting hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart — it rose to a peak of No. 47 on Feb. 11. 1961. Though she’s had higher-charting Hot 100 singles, “At Last” is arguably her signature recording — even though she wasn’t the first to sing it.

Lada Gaga’s Parents Open Italian Restaurant

Joseph and Cynthia Germanotta, the parents of Lady Gaga, have opened a Manhattan restaurant, Joanne Trattoria, the New York Times reports.

Some fans have already sought it out thanks to a Gaga appearance there on New Year’s Eve, but her parents are hoping the eatery won’t be overwhelmed with her millions of little monsters. Instead, Joanne will offer more of a neighborhood feel, albeit one with $25-$30 entrees.

“If they’re expecting to come in here and see Grammys and pictures and stuff like that, it’s not going to happen,” Joseph said, adding that his daughter “generates a lot of sizzle.”

Gaga told ABC News in November that “My dad and I opened up a restaurant together,” but her father told the Times that the singer is in fact not an owner of the new eatery.

Will.i.am has revealed one of the performers expected to spice up Madonna’s upcoming halftime extravaganza: LMFAO.

Will.i.am says, “I’m going to the Super Bowl this year to see my group LMFAO perform with Madonna.” LMFAO, who scored a pair of Hot 100 chart-toppers last year with “Party Rock Anthem” and “Sexy and I Know It,” are signed to Will.i.am Music Group through Cherrytree/Interscope.

The Peas star continued, “Check that out, Will.i.am Music Group is pretty freaking two for two…. One year the Super Bowl, the next year another group part of the Super Bowl in collaboration with Madonna. That’s still happening.”

Madonna was announced as the Super Bowl halftime show performer in December after months of speculation. Nicki Minaj is also rumored to show up at the Super Bowl performance, after the hip-hop star and pop legend collaborated on Madonna’s forthcoming single, “Give Me All Your Love.”

Aretha Franklin Calls Off Engagement

Aretha Franklin1

Aretha Franklin has called off her engagement.

A statement released Monday by her representative said Franklin’s wedding to Willie Wilkerson wasn’t going to happen.

“Will and I have decided we were moving a little too fast, and there were a number of things that had not been thought through thoroughly. There will be no wedding at this time,” Franklin said. “We will not comment on it any further because of the very personal and sensitive nature of it. We appreciate all of the many well wishes from friends.”

It’s unclear if the pair are still romantically involved.

Franklin, 69, announced shortly after New Year’s Day that she was getting married. In an interview with The Associated Press, the jovial Queen of Soul talked about getting fitted for gowns by designers including Vera Wang and Donna Karan, and said she hoped for a summer wedding in either Miami or the Hamptons in New York state.

Franklin said the relationship was particularly strong because they had been friends first.

“We’re very compatible, and he supports me and I support him a lot, and he has given me specialized attention that I don’t think I’ve received from anyone else,” she said.

Seal and Heidi Announce Their Split

seal heidi klum

Seal and Heidi Klum have announced that their 7 year marriage is ending.

In a statement Sunday night, the power couple announced their separation after rumors swirled over the weekend that a divorce was imminent.

“While we have enjoyed seven very loving, loyal and happy years of marriage, after much soul searching we have decided to separate,” the joint statement read. “We have had the deepest respect for one another throughout our relationship and continue to love each other very much, but we have grown apart. This is an amicable process and protecting the well-being of our children remains our top priority, especially during this time of transition. We thank our family, friends, and fans for their kind words of support. And for our children’s sake, we appreciate you respecting our privacy.”

The couple married in 2005 and has four children together, including the supermodel’s daughter from a previous relationship.

They were one of Hollywood’s most high-profile couples, and seemed to have the relationship everyone should envy. They two starred together in the music video “Secret,” they renewed their wedding vows each anniversary, boasted of their love in the media, and threw Halloween bashes together where they dressed in outrageous outfits, most recently last year in New York City, where the two engaged in their typical public display of affection for the cameras.

TMZ first reported on Saturday that the two planned to divorce.
